Actually, for years, the Taurus was the premier midsize sedan in America, and the Japanese had to work to beat it. Eventually it came down to a three way race between the Camry, Accord, and Taurus. For years it was nothing but a success story. Then unfortunately Ford, like the other Detroit manufacturers, let it slip and age while the Japanese pressed forward. That said, even the later ones were pretty good. We have an 04 Taurus wagon, and it is a pretty good car. Besides an interior door panel breaking apart a bit (just need to get some new fasteners) and a rough idle, it is serving us well, and that's after an early life as a rental car. Hard to argue with mpgs in the mid 20s, wide open cargo room, seating technically for 8, V6 power, and good visibility. They're pretty easy to work on too.
