You could argue your standard instrument panel is the same, but its not really the same as you will pay less attention to the road with the HUD than a standard instrument panel simply because your less interested in it.

I think it can prevent a lot more accidents than it causes. I almost never have to look down at my speedometer. I have noticed on a lot of new cars that it is getting harder to read the speedometers because the steering wheels are getting smaller, and a lot of cars have some kind of DIC in the middle of the dash which pushes the speedometer farther from the center. I have not been in a modern car in which the speedometer wasn't behind the steering wheel from my view angle.
It is also very nice for navigation. The street name, turn direction, and distance to turn show up as you approach your turn. That is a lot safer than having to keep looking down while approaching a turn to make sure you get the correct street.
