i think most people are in agreement that the Taurus was junk, but the Mustang engine in the SHO made it a junk body with a good engine.. lol much like the Lincoln Mark VIII

You totally missed the point.
Taurus has been around forever, and no matter what its reputation may be, people still know what a Taurus is which translates into people being able to seek out the vehicle when shopping. Changing the name to Five Hundred just confuses people into thinking it's not the car they're looking for. One of my teachers in high school went to trade in his 13 year old Ford Taurus and ended up getting a Fusion instead because there wasn't a Taurus available at the time and he had no idea what a Five Hundred was. Mullaly himself said that changing nameplates was one of the biggest mistakes Ford ever made.
