I use to see a few american cars in japan when I was stationed there from time to time especially at night when the streets were not as congested. We knew that the people who could afford to pay the high taxes on these cars had to be wealthy. Imported american cars did not have to be right hand drive and that also made it harder to drive on the left hand side of the street. We had to have an "A" driver or assistant driver when driving our military vehicles off base to assist the primary driver thru traffic.
It was not uncommon to see muscle cars racing the streets after midnight with Fairlady Z's, Silvia's, Mazda's Cosmo's and Savanna RX7's and also the infamous Skyline GTR's back in the '80's and the '90's.
