My wives cousin has had a 08 or 09 s4, a TT 3 series, and most recently picked up a '13 335 x drive.
There's reasons, as you've stated, that the cost is equal but the performance is not.
I'd love the chance to drive an M3. Didn't get to watch video but holy hell, an 8400 rpm redline? I'd be in love.
