Thanks to everyone for your advice, it was a big help. This weekend we bought a 2000 Ford, Ranger, extended cab, with the off road package.
We paid $4600 for it. There weren't a lot of small trucks on the market which surprised me. We found it at a dealership an hour from our home.
We didn't take a hit on insurance. Putting my 18 year old in a little, beater, truck was better than carrying him on my wife's Eclipse.
