You can do a lot to stay fit with doing general exercising at home and around town WITHOUT going to the gym. Pushups, sit-ups/planks, pull-ups, running, biking, jumping rope, hiking, rock climbing, swimming...
That said, I also live in SoCal, where some of the most vain people I've ever met live...

Yea, I totally hear ya on that. The way they guy mentioned it with such an absolute statement kinda raised my eyebrow.
Most everyday gyms are horrendous. Any chain fitness center is generally filled with many tools.
I go to a small, performance gym now with high level trainers and athletes. We even train with a few professional athletes. I live in a condo with no access to a pool or anything. To say you can be physically fit without the right program or tools is highly debatable.
