You're only partially correct. Chevy actually initiated the Gen 6 car by telling NASCAR that they will pull out of NASCAR if they didn't let them use cars that look more like showroom cars. Apparently they were very close to pulling out of NASCAR. When the Gen 6 program started GM wanted to base their car off a car that had a good profile, and was V8, rear drive. You're right that GM doesn't care much how well the Chevy SS sells, they just wanted to race something similar to what they sell. I applaud them for having the only car in the Sprint Cup that is actually V8, rear drive from the showroom as well.
