China supplies North Korea with close to 70% of its fuel and 40% of its food.

And yet, it has very little leverage over what North Korea does and does not do.

That being true, then the reason why the Chinese are doing this is to simply prop up the current regime.

Why do that?

It could be as simple as them not wanting an overthrow of the North Korean rulers which might lead to a unification of North and South Korea such as what happened in Germany.

If that happened, then they would have a Democracy on their border.

Sure, the North Korean power base is what is provoking what is going on right now, but don't be fooled, this is the result of policies set in Beijing.
