The ebay app for iPhone/Android works well. Just "watch" an item and it will notify you 10 minutes before the auction ends. Then you just wait it out and sneak in your best offer at the last few seconds. Usually helps to avoid major bidding wars. Just pop in the most you want to pay and move on. Sometimes if the seller has more than one of an item they will contact you with a second chance to buy one at the top price you bid. It's a great option when they offer it to you.
