Well obviously you need more time in school.
The dig at American cars is a recurring joke; but their comments aren't ALL bad against American cars. This contradiction/inconsistency indicates that the insults are jokes, and not true feelings. If they were true feelings, then they would never say good things about American cars; since they do say very good things about American cars - then the insults are sarcastic jokes.
There, did I verbalize it simply enough for you? I thought my first explanation was clear, and frankly quite insulting in my mind since I didn't think I had to explain sarcasm, but apparently some people really don't understand it.
The funny thing is, Clarkson isn't insulting American cars when he uses sarcasm - he's insulting those who get upset about it.
