It's all marketing hype. 8 must be better than 6...

The Vette just got a 3rd overdrive on the Stingray 7 speed. Drive a current 6 speed vette, 6th is super tall and more than enough overdrive. Driving one I've never thought... wish it had another overdrive.

And diesels.... can't stand the stench, noise, or fuel price. Pass.
You sir have no clue. A well tuned 8 speed will simply crap all over the 6 speed transmissions. it is not just about having higher gears, but also more tightly spaced gears that keeps the eninge in the powerband. Take the Charger and 300, not only did they gain 4 MPG on the highwayway just by switching to the 8 speed automatic, but it knocked a full second off the 0-60 time and there have been no complaints about the transmission hunting for gears or anything like that.

As for modern diesels, there is no stench or noise and the fuel price is easily offset by the extra MPG, basically any modern VW car can get mid 40s in the MPG pretty easily and they provide great torque numbers.
