It's like this: More people die in car accidents than plane travel, but when a plane crashes, humans react with horror because of the drama. A large group of people are killed in a very dramatic fashion triggering our fear.

Similarly gun deaths in general do not trigger fear, but a large number of people killed in dramatic fashion does.

Banning the sale of large capacity magazines will work for this reason: those who already have them will treasure them and protect them because they know if they lose them, they can't get them any more. Therefore crazy people who commit these senseless mass murders are highly unlikely to get them. Professional criminals do not commit senseless murders because it's bad for business, only crazy people do, and crazy people don't have the resources to obtain banned items.

I think it's silly to ban assault rifles, but it does make sense to limit their sale, improve background checks and ban large capacity magazines.
