They aren't exactly stripped bare. Just a bunch of wiring and other components are missing from all of the orbiters except Discovery since Discovery is the vehicle of record. Also, Discovery and Enterprise are the only ones standing up. Atlantis is tilted off the ground, and Endeavour is on stilts right now. But it will soon be displayed as if it were on the launch pad.

The orbiters themselves aren't exactly fragile, their tiles are. They're so fragile you can break one with your finger nail. They are 90% air after all.
