In the past people have said manuals are better manuals are quicker and manuals are more fuel efficient !
That was back in the old days !!!!!!
Today a modern automatic runs circles around a manual in everyway yes sticks are a lot of fun when you want to go 100mph or do those cool burnouts then there is the heavy traffic moments and the replacment of those wonderful overrated clutches that can take abuse when they really cant.
There are quite A few idiots such as me who live to find a good race every once in a while but still likes to own my car and drive it daily without all the troubles a manual has to offer.
All things being equal an automatic car with a decent torque converter will run off and hide from a stick, Usually be a pretty good amount. MODERN computer controlled automatics will always shift at the exact same rpm every run and will never miss a shift. The new generation of automatics are also quite strong.
I know of a new ... same trans with paddleshifters ) to make it more "fun" if you choose to use them. As to a race from a roll, you use your shifter to keep the car in a lower gear BEFORE the race starts. If you have to wait for the transmission to downshift on it's own the stick will have a big advantage because the driver will ALREADY have it in a low gear. If both drivers are prepared and the cars are equal otherwise it should be a pretty equall race unless the manual driver misses a gear and when it comes down to the moment of racing a drive who never misses a gear is something thats Very rare. GM's drivetrain has a 100,000 mile factory warranty so obviously Chevy thinks there tranny will handle anything I myself or you can throw at it.
To sum it all up, manual shift trannies are dinosaurs yes they are fun but also OLD NEWS. The new generation in automatics beat them in every way.
Chevy sells more automatic Corvettes each year than they do sticks just ask any dealer on this site. Go to the drag stip and compare the number of automatics to manual shift cars.....
High school kids love sticks. It makes them feel more masculine. Personally I'd rather feel like a winner on the track and streets and comfortable doing so at the same time. These same kids think smoking makes them look more masculine too so we know how smart they are huh ?
