The recorded data is stored before and after an air bag deployment. It's not easy to get. It would likely take a manufacturer to get the info and would require a warrant (court order) to obtain. It's not for fender benders. It's there for issues like vehicular homicide etc. Even then the cause of collision would probably be obvious and not require stored data.
