Insiders Claiming 3.7L V6 for 2011MY Mustang

Insiders including Blue II on BON and Wescoent on GM Inside News are now claiming that the base 2011 Mustang will be the first rwd application of the new Duratec 'Cyclone' V6, and that the engine used will displace 3.7L. Ford Australia recently reviewed a north-south version of the 3.7L provided by FNA for possible Falcon duty, and decided to keep the currently employed 4.0L I6 due to the added torque the inline unit brings to the table. It seems likely that the unit tested by FOA is the same one being readied for Mustang duty, and according to insiders that test engine employed next generation heads and intake leading the engine to produce a bit more power than the 3.7L unit currenly used in the MKS. For reference, the 3.7L unit currently employed in the MKS produces 275hp and 276lb-ft of torque.

Right now it looks like 2011 base Mustang specs will be....

Curb weight less than the current base 2010 which weighs in at 3400lb.

More than 275hp and 276lb-ft of torque.

A six speed automatic is also a given although I have heard nothing regarding what the manual transmission offering might be.

If the car drops more than one hundred pounds, and Ford finds another 10hp/10lb-ft of torque and slightly fattens/flattens the torque curve we could be looking at a solid 13 second car here.
