I agree, and would have no problem re-taking a drivers test every few years [I think every year is overkill for any age]. And @patternpilot, if you had read my follow up post [3 posts above yours], you would see that I do drive defensively and safely every single time I sit behind the wheel. It's just hard to explain an "almost accident" on the internet. If I had not been paying attention [i.e. texting or fiddling with an iPod], I wouldn't have seen that old lady, and wouldn't have been able to take the precautionary measurements to PREVENT the accident [slamming on the brakes and laying on the horn].
Either way, I feel this thread is dead. People have had some good opinions. I just don't like how some people mistook some of the things I said [like I was bashing old people in general]. But it's hard to detect tone of voice over the internet, so I get why some people took it that way...
