Good for you! I've been in the car business in service and sales and, I can verify if you're not a crook at a dealer you won't stay there long.
Once you know what's going on, you'll be safe. References from your brother and other mechanics are usually very valuble. And payment arrangements can put them over the top.
If you really want to open an honest shop later, don't pay mechanics flat-rate.
Pay the an hourly salary with production bonus incentives so they make a living honestly. Good technicians value such an arrangment.
Anyway , good luck - 85000 miles plus isn't bad for a tranny.
