Camaros have always been "my" car, have wanted one all my life and I finally bought one so I definitely know where you're coming from, although I'm about 4 years removed from being a teenager
Key is to never buy anything that you are not comfortable with financially or physically driving. An SS as a first car may be a little rough, especially when you factor in maintenance and up keep plus that whole mod bug thing
My Camaro is my garage queen and it is definitely babied, maintained and going to be one hella Camaro once I start modding. I would never EVER park it at a college campus after my undergrad experience with my now DD, Pontiac G6 GT coupe, thing was backed into, door dinged, etc... even though I parked very very very far away because at the time that was my baby.
Anyway I'm not trying to scare you away from a Camaro but I'm just trying to put into your mind this is not going to be your everyday first car beater. It will be costly, need extreme care and the right amount of motivation to keep it pristine and well to keep it. Your young years may not be the best time to do this seeing as there are lot of distractions with college and life in general but if you're motivated you can do it!
Oh and if your parents are paying for you to have an SS you are the luckiest kid out there! Please show them some affection and don't take advantage of this awesome opportunity
