Kirkman has already said that those that follow the comics would be bored if the show was exactly the same as the comics and it keeps everyone guessing. Plus, he needed to develop the TV characters for those who aren't familiar with the comics. You cannot accurately predict what's going to happen next on the show whether you follow the comics or not. As pointed out already, they're using the comics as a loose guideline of where the show goes. But there's already been a lot of twists from the comics.

The only other point he specifically made was to NOT get too attached to any of the characters because they're subject to be zombie food at any moment.

I DVR the show, but I've been noticing something lately. It seems that you get 5 minutes of show, then it breaks for 5 minutes of commercials. Seriously. I don't know if it is because everyone wants to advertise in that slot or what, but it used to be about 40 minutes of actual show with 20 minutes worth of commercials, but now it seems it's closer to 30 and 30.
