Changing the gearing increases the torque at the rear wheel. This increases how quick the truck will accelerate, at the expense of maximum possible speed (which usually isn't an issue, unless you plan on running at Bonneville) as well as fuel economy (which, again, usually isn't an issue to enthusiasts).

As for being as good or better than heads ... I'm skeptical. They might, they might not. But in terms of cost vs benefit, I can see the appeal of rear gears.
