When resizing photos, try to halve the size (or 1/4, 1/8, etc).
The reason for this is something called pixelation. If you resize from 2580x1600 to 800x600 (for example), those numbers don't round properly, so it trys to interpret what the color might not normally be...so it won't look as clean as if you take an image from 2560x1600 to 1280x800.
