I think you would love it if someone took the time to teach you the game. I call it "the thinking man's game" because there are no set plays like in football or baseball. It's dynamic and so instead of watching where the puck is, watch where the puck is going to go. Look for the open man and anticipate the pass.
When Ottawa was in the finals against Anaheim a few years ago, I bought playoff tickets just to experience what it's like for fans to go nuts in a confined space (if you call an arena that sits 21,000 confined). Unlike your typical Super Bowl, very few people are hammered out of there mind or doing stupid stuff to spoil the moment.
Above all, there is no euphoria like a playoff game. To be in a rink and see the winning goal go in during overtime is either an absolute downer and you go into immediate shock, or a high like you will never forget.
