Your entire, original hypothesis is completely wrong. Enthusiasts just want to convert whatever they own into something different than what it is. Others just buy for other reasons.

Nobody is debating for or against that "enthusiasts" (I call them ricers, but whatever) are converting what they own into something different than what it is. Duh. If they're not converting it, then there's no point of my opening question!
The debate is about their motives. If one betrays their motives by modding with a "RWD race car" bias, then it shows their ignorance when they start with a "FWD econobox".
