Here's an attempt at an answer:
1. Guy has a Mustang
2. Guy likes Transformers
3. Guy like Bumblebee
4. Guy still likes his Mustang and can't afford a new car
5. Guy figures - why not, it's his car (same logic that fakers use to upbadge their car).
I think that some people have friends that don't care about authenticity in their lives and therefore they do this because they would never be judged by whomever they hang out with.
