Owners of cars at shows always get stupid requests about selling their car from people that have no clue what they are worth or any serious intentions of buying.

I would simply say that your father would like to have one like he had back, and you want to buy one for him. Then ask if the car is for sale, or if he knows anyone that has one for sale or where you could get one. That way it looks like your are serious about buying without being willing to overpay for that particular car.
