General Motors will keep to its plans to sell the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid in the United States by the 2010 calendar year. However, GM vice president for research & development and planning, Larry Burns, says that because it's just now taking delivery of its first Lithium-Ion batteries, the '10 deadline will be a challenge. And the Volt will launch in very small volume.
"We're not going to sell it in every city and we're not going to sell it through every Chevrolet dealership," Burns told just-auto.com in an exclusive interview. He says it won't pay to equip every Chevy dealership with the equipment and training necessary to service the car. And really, such a slow rollout isn't any different than what Toyota did with the Prius in its first years, when it was selling the hybrid for well less than half of what it cost to build, according to most analysts' estimates.
