Last Monday was a tough day, but I wanted to share some info on our family member.
My wife and I had to have our friend and companion laid to rest this Monday morning...
He had a rare form of cancer, diagnosed about three weeks ago. We discussed the situation with our vet and decided that we would monitor his quality of life.
Satchmo, (W-Bar's Lord Satchmo of Lazy D) was the neighborhood dog... He was a friend to one and all and took great pride in watching out for little ones, two and four legged little ones...
As late as Sunday night he went for a walk to check out his neighborhood and didn't exhibit and problems other than a slight limp in the shoulder, and some instability which is what had led us to take him to the vet, in his back legs, but he trooped on tail wagging and checking everything out like always. Monday morning, for the first time, he had a really hard time getting up and could not put any weight on his left foreleg. For a 200 lb dog, this is a major concern. The original diagnoses was for cancer in his hind legs. Apparently it was spreading quite fast, and out of fairness to him, we decided to put him down... He gave us so much, we didn't want to prolong his pain for our selfish concerns, and we didn't want him in a drug induced haze.
We have several neighbors that would come over and let him out during the day so he could hang with the kids...
I've never had a better dog, or four legged companion. He is comfortable, and wherever in heaven he is, you can bet that tail is thumping...

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. Satchmo was an absolute gentle giant. We would see him often on walks. I did not realize until this thread that we live in the same neighborhood. Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.
