The quickest way (albeit not exactly my preferred way) to diffuse that situation was to simply drop your firearm. You were totally outgunned no matter how you look at it. As long as they saw whatever firearm you were holding as a possible threat, there could still be the potential of someone acting on nervous impulse and shooting both you and your woman. As to placing your body between your wife and them, that's very honorable, but I personally wouldn't have given them two easy targets to hit. Besides, based on your post, it doesn't sound like they were very far away and standing in front of your wife would've only made it easier for them to kill both of you with even just one well placed (or totally accidental off-the-wall lucky) shot from, perhaps, a nervous hand. As to prosecuting then, I hope you got a good look at these guys or know them well because you will positively need to identify them to the police.
Honestly, if it was my "neighbors" that did that, I would make a one time attempt to visit them and discuss the situation in an entirely different setting. It's hard to argue with "nice". If they're civil people, it may make talking about it (without the guns around) something that everyone honestly regrets and does their best to avoid in the future. If you work it out, and you still plan on target practicing, work out a location that is acceptable to both homes. That way they can then expect to hear gun fire from your direction not interpret it as hostile. After all, unless you plan to move, they WILL be your inlaws neighbors for whatever amount of time to come. If theyre a bunch of yahoos - or gung-ho-back-land "F" off and-die-I hate-you people, or drug dealers, it may not get you anywhere to visit them. Then you can decide if you want to file charges.
We have a private campground located out of town that we spent the weekends at. We have a next door neighbor who owns a house a few hundred yards through the woods next to us. Both places like to enjoy shooting lots of firearms (.22s all the way up through Military and big bore hunting rifles). We have met with the owner of the other place and worked out solid "shoot-only-in this-direction" for target practicing as well as acceptable hours during the day to shoot. Works for everyone and no one gets pissed off.
My .02 cents worth.
