10 - 1 odds he probably thought you gave him the finger. Let's be honest...how many times does a Camaro give a wave to a Mustang? IF we are being honest, never.
I know I got plenty of inappropriate gestures from Camaro owners in my Cobra for no reason..but only 5th gen owners for some reason.
Quick story since we are talking mentality:
Few months back, I'm stopped sitting at a red light in the left turn lane. Convertible top down on a Saturday, just chilling. This black SS (5th gen that's all I know) with a bald guy and his g/f or wife or whoever turns to go past me the opposite direction. Dude looks at me..and right as he goes by he glares at me and revs it. Total douchebag. Obviously it had muffler swaps or some sort of Flowmasters on it. Ok..WTF. I'm stuck in a turn lane. So I see him turn into a gas station and decide ok, if that's how it is so be it....waited for the light to turn, made my left turn and pulled into the same gas station.
That's when things got really funny...I pulled up to the opposite side of the same pump he was at. I got out, just pumped gas like normal. And the guy was whispering to his girl, "Is that the same Cobra from the light?" and I hear her say "Yes". I keep waiting for him to say something, but of course now that I'm not stuck in traffic on the other side of a median he has nothing to say.
So I get back in my car and kinda sit and wait for him to start up his SS. He cranks it up and as soon as he does I fire up my Cobra. I should explain, I had straight pipes going into Flowmaster single chamber race mufflers. I couldn't even hear his car for mine. So I smile and peg the gas pedal one time...absolutely deafening under the gas station covered area. I roll out and see that Mr. I-Wish-You-Would-Try-Me-With-Your-Mustang has decided to take a different exit and go away.
Moral of the story: Camaro + Mustang = Always a problem. I think the dislike is just as strong on both sides of the fence, and I really don't think the OP did anything wrong..but I can definitely see how someone in a Mustang would think they did, and vice versa.
