The way you broke it down there is very similar to what happens here. In order to get into the academy I had to pass a PT test, background check, polygraph, and oral board interview (plus all the other 'application' stuff). I was there for 6 months.

Here in Fl. most agencies will accept applications from recruits and start processing you while in the academy (usually at least 1/2 way through).

FTO for agencies around here is anywhere from 8 weeks to 6 months (4 months for me). Then another 8 months of probation.

Now, this how it works for a non-hired recruit. Some agencies around here will obviously sponsor you, so you're hired when you start the academy (considering you complete the course). I'm not exactly sure how things change for them.
