I always do. First it is the gentlemanly thing to do. Second it is for safety. If I am right there with her and open the door, I can confirm she is in the car and nobody can try to steal her purse or attempt something even worse.
This is much the same reason I always walk down the stairs in front of her, and up the stairs behind her. If she falls due to the high heels, I am there to catch her and break her fall.
Additionally, when in a crowd she is always walking either next to me with her purse between us, or I am walking behind her. First I REALLY like the view. Secondly, nobody can walk up behind her and mess with purse without going through me.
