Oh yeah, they definitely have a good amount of control.
However, I don't think you can say 100% that he wasn't asked to step down. Probably 99% of the time the CEO steps down is because they are asked by the board. Maybe that didn't happen this time but we really don't know. I also can assure you he doesn't have the power alone to select the new CEO. The board would have to approve, which wouldn't be hard because Mullaly's credentials are outstanding.
NOTE: No matter what it was obviously a great decision and I'm sure it helped Ford to be in the position it is in today.
