I've driven the Altima CVT and I had the chance to spend some time in the GM CVT several years ago that quietly came and went in some Saturn products (VUE and ION). Not a fan. Feel like you are driving a snowmobile. But if you don't like it, you can get the manual.
I think Nissan is going after style in this segment. That is what Hyundai taught everyone in this class, you can have a stylish car for the price point. If you recall, Toyota even delayed the latest Camry for a few tweaks. I am hoping that the Malibu can compete as it remains in my opinion, still a bit formal. That will sell of course, but it may not compete with people wanting a bit more flash for the money. If I recall correctly, the Maxima and Altima share the same platform so taking the Altima into the more stylish Maxima territory is likely a good move for them. Maybe a chance to pass Hyundai's Sonata?
