But doesn't the oil life indication system have to be reset when the oil is changed or does it automatically do it?
(When I say it had me over 10k I mean it alerted me so close to 10k that I ended up going over before I got the chance to change)

You have to reset it yourself, the engine can't tell when fresh oil has been put in the crankcase, yet.
