I closely watch the automotive industry which means I read everything from all of the players. While there is no question that there is tension between the CAW, UAW and GM as well as the governments of the US and Canada. The key issue to look at is the state of the economy and its impact on the industry. The CAW can be as mad as hell if they want to be but here is the point. They have jobs and many of their brothers and sisters do not. In this economy that is a very compelling reason to come to terms and make a compromise. The worst case scenario is GM moves the production to another plant. If we see GM begin to add another plant making this car, like a plant in the US then we will know that they are doing that to protect themselves.

The author also ties these tensions to the additional shifts that were added recently. This is related to GM's desire to sell every profitable car they can as soon as possible. The Camaro is the most important car GM has made since the Malibu and is essential to getting them back to profit. They would be foolish to not ramp up production so that everyone of us that wants a car can get one ASAP. As GM cuts costs they also must sell as profitable cars and the Camaro was designed to make a pretty nice profit and to offer a car to a pretty broad audience.

There is no way GM is going to allow the Camaro to be in jepordy. As soon as Oshwa got the Camaro there were rumors that they would try to apply leverage to get a better deal on GM because the Camaro is so important. I read this stuff for about a year. Recently the tone has changed and I think most of the members are very happy to have a job and they realize that GM can make this car anywhere.

No way GM is going to let the Camaro be effected by labor games.
