A bunch of us had been out of school for a year or two and we were out partying one Friday night. After the bars closed (12:45 AM or maybe 1 AM in Minneapolis at the time), we decided to head to a restaurant in Uptown to get some food. That particular area is charmed with old businesses with little parking and narrow, one-way, cobblestone streets, so we had to park a few blocks way and walk to the restaurant, which is fun on a summer night.
A stoplight controlled traffic at the last intersection we had to cross. As we waited on foot for the light to turn green, I was overcome with dread that once the light turned, one of us was going to trip and fall in the street and a distracted driver with blond hair who was paying attention to the opposite light and not the people in front of his car, would run over who ever fell.
Just then the light turned green and we started to cross in a not-so-orderly manner as everyone was drinking and people were horsing around.
That is when everything went into slow-motion.
We were half way accross the street when I saw the driver with blond hair looking to his left, focusing on traffic light of the opposing lanes. Bonnie, one of my co-workers, who'd consumed plenty, was about 6 feet ahead of me when she tripped and went face down. The driver didn't see her fall in front of his car. Our light turned yellow and I was freaking out. I started shouting at him, trying to get his attention, telling him not to go. I don't know if he saw or heard me. I reached down and grabbed her under her arms lurching her up to her feet. Our light was red and the distracted driver had a green light but thank God he finally saw us.
Bonnie, in her haze, thanked me for picking her up out of the street and asked me if there was something wrong because I looked as white as a sheet.
Call it whatever you like, premonition, Guardian Angels, whatever. I have no doubt.
