I think the part of my post that talks about "functional beauty" is the key answer to the OP question, and yet it's gone largely ignored.
To reiterate: the Ferrari looks cool because it's design has function and has roots in F1. Simply having a similar design without the function is fake/pretentious, which is not a position that appeals to the middle-class. The elite classes, who have more individuals who generally stand out from the crowd, tolerate conspicuous stances and therefore exotic looking cars are acceptable to that social class (but real exotics, not just ones that pretend).
