It's nothing new. It used to happy with sticky throttle cables. These days it could happen with a malfunctioning throttle actuator or a bug in the computer program. The Prius's propulsion is even more disconnected from the driver, as the computer decides whether to operate the electric motor, gas, or both.

...but would a FWD car have a similar shaped transmission pan? The transmission is shaped very different.
