From my personal experience, in the heat of things, it doesn't matter what caliber it is, a gun is a gun. A perp doesn't care if it's a .22 or a .45. The first thing he sees and the only thing going though his mind is "OH SH*T HE'S GOT A GUN!" He's not going to sit there and go "Oh it's just a .22 so nothing to be worried about."
Any caliber can be a "One shot stop", it's all about shot placement. I've witnessed people be stopped with just one shot of a .22 LR and if a .22 LR can a .380 sure can.
As for the new bullets, maybe you should read up on the tests of the Critical Defense ammo made by Hornady. The .380 CD ammo has better ballistics, more penetration, and more stopping power than your typical .45 hollow point and the .22 WMR CD has better ballistics, more penetration, and more stopping power than your typical .40 hollow point. Why carry such a big gun for self defense when you can carry something much smaller and get the same or better performance?
