Consider taking a basic firearms class at a range nearby. They provide everything to make you comfortable at shooting. At that point you know more about what works for you. Semi(automatic) or revolver, longer barrels, sights, and safety. "Everyone" I know that has taken a class came away very happy they did it.
My wife just started shooting in the last year. She loves her Beretta NEOS 22. (I like it too) It has been a very reliable gun, but is too big to conceal. She decided it's time to step it up and just ordered a 9mm SW M&P Pro Series.
I am sure there are a bunch of others that are excellent, but these are models I have personally shot and maintained.
Ruger Mark III shoots nice but is a pain to take apart and clean.
Beratta Neos
SW makes a 22 version M&P similar to their 9mm.
