I think this is the way people are. I manage a fairly large-sized Printer in NYCity and I am sure the people I work with are the same way. But my wife and I have no kids, so I always say, "Hey if you had no kids you can get one too. I bet your kids cost more in 2 years than my car costs....and I have 5 years to pay for it"
To each his own, you have to live your life. Do not drive the car to the business, keep it home. If that doesn't help because the town is too small then you have to move to grow as a person. It is hard to live the high life in a small town mentality.
And if you buy it and they vandalize it, it is just an excuse to get a custom paint job. Life throws you lemons, you make lemonade!!
One good thing about NY, neighbors barely talk. We say hello, how are you and that is it. Life is so busy people do not have the time to get into each others business. Idle Hands and minds are the devils playgrounds!
