Wow that's cool. Out here in CA traffic school is only used to keep the citation off your driving record so your insurance wont go up but it has absolutely nothing to do with the fine that all guilty party's have to pay on your court date. If your ticket is for $200 and you want traffic school you have to pay the courts $200 + $30 for the school option that day and then the $40 or so for school once you attend.

So if you promise the judge that you will go to traffic school he will suspend your entire fine just as long as you dont get another ticket in 5 years.
