the theory proves viable... up to a certain boost level. current s/c's have the internal bypass that is usually activated 80-90% of driving time. only when you get on the throttle is the full boost actually going to the engine.
however, you are still spinning the rotors inside the housing. So if you could create a clutch system that could hold enough pressure to give you up to say.. 10 psi on a 2.0L supercharger... you could have the best of both worlds. power on tap whenever you want it, but you could disengage it and not waste the power to spin the blower when not under boost
