You guys laugh, but I think for someone to do something like this is an act of desperation for some sort of validation of their existence. Basically this guy is uneducated and working some dead-end job and watching the world over-take him and to create this illusion of "success" is his way of masking his failures.
Obviously his lack of education and resources, plus the equally resource-less peers he has prevents him from being any wiser of his "real" situation and how he is "really" perceived by others in higher social classes.
In other words, it's a situation that really ought to be pitied, not ridiculed. Trust me - he already has had his share of real sports cars pulling up beside him and showing off their real muscle; he needs to quietly be ignored so he can have a semblence of dignity - he doesn't need wiser folks to belittle him.
Another way to look at this is when we were all resource-less students - we all did stupid stuff to validate our existence. But we look back and see how stupid we must have looked. But we can look back and laugh because we are no longer resource-less. Some people never get out of that state, and therefore continue to maintain a charade.
