Economically you will not save because if you wanted that your buy the cruze and get good mpg for half the price. It would take many many years for the volt to finally become a cheaper alternative to the volt.
So you take out saving gas money and your left with a car that isn't a luxury car isnt a performance car and doesn't really look good.
And very few people would make a car purchase based on " saving" the environment.
I understand GM has to have a car to compete with the other green cars and bring down that fuel consumption government number average.
But let's be real and I know you can't cuz you work for the company but be real homie

Are you incapable of reading this entire thread? I already stated everything you just did. That being said, Volt actually performs fairly well for an EV (something that everyone comments about with their first test drive), is fairly well appointed inside even without options, and looks are completely subjective.
However, the point I am trying to make is this: IF YOU ARE IN THE MARKET FOR AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE, the Volt is your best option, $40k price tag be damned.
I cannot believe how many grown men here are apparently completely incapable of getting that through their heads. Nobody is suggesting that we should all trade in our current cars for Volts. That being said, if you ARE interested in an electric car, which the majority of this site will not be, then you would be best off with a Volt.
By the way, "nobody is buying the Volt" is a ludicrous statement. 6000+ people beg to differ.
