Yes the Volt uses no gasoline for the first 40 miles. That's about a $4 savings in gas if a Cruze uses one gallon during the same first 40 miles.
If you drove a Volt everyday for one year , you would save $1460 in gas annually with the Volt.
It would take 14 years of Volt driving to break even with the extra $20,000 the Volt costs over a Cruze.
Volt economics does not pencil out yet.
If Chevy sold $20,000 Volts, GM would sell a bazillion of them.
