I'd say the reason varies depending on the person. Some may be unhappy at home and feel the need to look elsewhere, while others do it just for the thrill of cheating and being able to try something "new". I'm sure self esteem plays a factor in some cases, but I can't see it being the only reason. It's just a convenient excuse.
