Just like it was in the late '60s, too.. And another 3-4 out of 10, were VWs. Over-rated? People perceived them to be a good value, so they sold well. Honestly, those '60s VW were better built than any '60s Mustangs or Camaros were. Quality on both domestics have improved since then, but I think they're both still crude cars, as compared to many others currently available. By that thinking, yes, the Mustang is over-rated. You can also say the same for the crudely-built Camaro and Challenger.
You don't buy any of them for build quality or interior refinement; it's more about emotions and attitude, and all 3 are relatively equal.
